On Wednesday night, an incident left everyone in America in shock as an American Airlines regional passenger plane collided with a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter, resulting in a mid-air crash. In the wave of the devastating news, former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III has taken to social media to express his deep sorrow and concern. 

The American Airlines, designated as Flight 5342, was carrying 64 passengers when it collided with the military helicopter, which had three soldiers onboard. The devastating incident has resulted in a large-scale search operation in the Potomac River, where both aircraft crashed.

Griffin, who addressed the news on his social media, shared a heartfelt message on X, expressing his shock and sorrow, and urging followers to pray for the passengers and crew involved. As he wondered how the mishap happened, his message resonated with many while the search efforts continued into the night.

The collision has raised questions regarding air traffic safety and communication protocols between the civilian and military aircraft– which the NFL analyst Griffin also questioned in his tweet. There has been a temporary closure of Reagan National Airport as all flight operations have been halted until further notice.

As of now, several confirmed fatalities have been reported, with emergency responders actively searching the icy waters of the Potomac River for any potential survivors. According to CNN, over 300 emergency personnel are engaged in the complex rescue mission. U.S. President Donald Trump expressed his grief over the devastating news, shortly after Vice President JD Vance urged his followers to “pray for everyone involved.”

Additionally, he raised concerns about the control tower’s inaction, questioning why it failed to prevent the crash and instead merely inquired if the military helicopter saw the plane, suggesting that the disaster could have been averted.

Meanwhile, citizens are drawing parallels between this crash and the tragic Air Florida flight in 1982, which also occurred in the Potomac River and resulted in the loss of 78 lives, due to severe weather conditions.
