Robert MacIntyre has landed in hot water. The Scottish golfer lost his cool during the opening round of the Masters Tournament at the Augusta National Golf Club and made an obscene gesture. Golf fans on social media blasted him for this.

The World No. 8 had been in fine form this year. In his 7 starts on the PGA Tour, he made the cut in all of them. Last week at the Valero Texas Open, he found himself in contention. He, however, was unable to get the job done as a final round score of 70 saw him fall down 1 position and finish as one of the runners-up behind J.J. Spaun.

This week, the 2-time PGA Tour winner was paired with former U.S. Open winner Gary Woodland and World No.1 Scottie Scheffler. He started well with 3 pars and 1 birdie in the opening 4 holes. Two back-to-back bogeys on Holes 5 and 6 were followed by a double bogey on the 9th hole.

He finished the front nine with a 3-over par score. It seemed things were back in control for him as he made 5 successive pars to start the second nine. It was at the 15th hole where things spiraled out of his control.

On the par-5 15th hole, MacIntyre’s second shot to find the greens landed in the water. After taking the drop, his fourth shot was not better either as it bounced a few times before rolling into the pond again. He eventually finished with a quadruple bogey (9) on this hole.

The 29-year-old was visibly upset by this. He would lose his tempers and quickly show off his middle finger.

MacIntyre made another bogey on the 17th hole. He would even slam his club at the 14th and 17th holes as the frustrations started to get the better of him. He eventually finished the round with an 8-over 80 score and ranked T82.

After a good start, Robert MacIntyre slipped up in the opening round of the Masters Tournament. The golfer lost his temper and made an obscene gesture at the 15th hole after carding a score of 9 on this hole.

Golf fans on X slammed him for this. Many called him out and attacked him for his actions at the Augusta National Golf Club. One user wrote, “should be escorted off the grounds“, while making their feelings known.

The golfer now faces the prospect of missing the cut. With the cutline projected to be around 3-over par, he will need a much-improved performance on Friday to keep himself alive in the competition and play on the weekend.

The 2023 U.S. Ryder Cup captain later denied using such words against a patron at the Augusta National. He expressed that his strong words were directed towards himself and apologized for it.

The Augusta National is known for its strict conditions about formality and proper conduct around the golf course. Last year, amateur golfer Jose Luis Ballester came under tremendous heat after he took a bathroom break at the course. MacIntyre could thus receive a strict warning or a reprimand by the Masters tournament officials.
