Roger Federer slips down further in ATP Rankings after conclusion of Miami Open 2021
Roger Federer
The conclusion of Miami Open 2021 did not see huge movements in the top 10 ATP Rankings. Roger Federer, who skipped the event in Miami saw his ranking fall by one spot to seventh. Alexander Zverev managed to reach only the second round of the ‘Glam Slam’, but earned 500 points after his triumph at the Mexican Open, which was enough to make him the new world number six.
As per the new rankings system announced by ATP, a player will lose 50% of their 2019 points if they do not improve on the result in 2021. Roger Federer’s withdrawal from the Miami Open 2021 meant that he lost 500 points, as he had won the title in 2019, defeating John Isner in the final.
Roger Federer had 6375 points to his name before the Miami Open, but now has only 5875 points. Alexander Zverev earned just 55 points in Miami, but he was sure to surpass the Swiss, irrespective of his result.
Roger Federer sliding down the rankings
Roger Federer has seen his ranking fall from fifth to seventh in the span of just a month. Stefanos Tsitsipas, who reached the semifinals in Rotterdam last month, surpassed the Swiss to enter the top five rankings. The 39-year old had a chance to defend his rankings, but was defeated in the quarterfinals of Qatar Open 2021.
The 20 time Grandslam champion is a long way off from Stefanos Tsitispas, who is ranked fifth in the world. The Greek has 7040 points to his name, compared to Federer’s tally of 5875. This means that Roger Federer will need to have a good clay court season if he is to reclaim his ranking. A higher ranking is of utmost importance at Grandslams, given that it gives an opportunity to avoid the top players in the early rounds.
