Roger Federer‘s former coach, Ivan Ljubicic, has shared his thoughts on the rise of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz in 2024. The tennis duo has been dominant this year, winning all four Grand Slams and is likely to finish in the top two of the ATP rankings.

Ljubicic believes that Sinner’s consistency will lead him to defeat Alcaraz many times in the future. However, the Croatian also noted that Alcaraz’s intimidating presence on the court cannot be overlooked.

Sinner is more consistent. If we talk about ranking, he will probably be ahead of Alcaraz in many aspects. At the top, in a single tournament or in a direct clash, however, anything can happen. When Carlitos plays well, I’m not saying he’s unplayable, but he’s scary. On the other hand, regarding consistency, Jannik has made us understand and continues to make us understand that he is special.

Ivan Ljubicic said on Sky Sports

Sinner became World No. 1 in June after his semi-final performance at Roland Garros. He has held the top spot in the ATP rankings since then. Despite his success and consistency, Sinner has not been able to crack the code against Alcaraz this year. The two have faced each other three times in 2024, with the Spaniard winning all three matches.

Sinner started the year by winning his first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open. He added a Masters 1000 title in Miami and reached the semi-finals of the French Open, losing to Carlos Alcaraz. At Wimbledon, he was knocked out by Daniil Medvedev in the quarterfinals, and illness forced him to miss the Olympics. However, he bounced back with a US Open victory and another title in Shanghai.

Sinner’s dominant win over Djokovic confirmed he will end the year as world No. 1 in the ATP rankings. Only Nadal and Djokovic have secured the top spot faster than Sinner, with the left-hander setting the record in 2010 and the Serb breaking it in 2015.

Sinner is now leading the race to become the new face of men’s tennis, ahead of Alcaraz. Both have been predicted to dominate the sport in the future, but for now, the Italian holds the upper hand.
