Wimbledon is around the corner and doubts loom over Novak Djokovic‘s participation. But the two youngsters, Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz are ready to taste glory. Roger Federer‘s former coach Ivan Ljubicic picked these two youngsters over Djokovic as Wimbledon favorites.
Djokovic’s knee injury during the Roland Garros fourth round forced him to withdraw from the quarterfinals and without wasting much time, he decided to remove his torn meniscus. Although Djokovic started training at Wimbledon, he will only participate if he gets 100 percent fit.
Alcaraz played at the Queen’s Club Championships after the Roland Garros triumph to defend his title but lost to Jack Draper in his second round. Sinner, on the other hand, won the Halle Open by beating Hubert Hurkacz in the final, thereby winning his first grass-court title. As both these players are in good form and Djokovic lacks the rhythm, Ljubicic picked Sinner and Alcaraz as favorites for the crown at SW19.
Before Roland‐Garros, there were a lot of questions, especially from a physical point of view, regarding Alcaraz, Sinner, and even Djokovic, who was doing well, but who had no rhythm. Today everything is different. Sinner and Alcaraz seem to be going well and are the favorites. Nole has had surgery, but he will try to be present: that would be a very good thing. But for now, my favorites are Jannik and Carlitos.Ivan Ljubicic told Sky Sports (Punto de Break)
Wimbledon starts on July 1. Alcaraz will walk onto the court as the defending champion as he beat Djokovic last year in five sets to lift his first title at the SW19 and his second Grand Slam trophy.
Novak Djokovic has not yet won a tournament
Novak Djokovic is a seven-time Wimbledon champion, lifting his last title at the SW19 in 2022 by beating Australia’s Nick Kyrgios in four sets. Last year, Wimbledon was the only Grand Slam title Djokovic failed to win.
This year has so far been completely different from last year as the 24-time Grand Slam champion failed to win a single title in the six tournaments he played. He even lost his top position in the ATP Rankings to Jannik Sinner after pulling out of the Roland Garros.
Even though the former World No.1 failed to win a single trophy, he had a decent campaign at Roland Garros, for he won two back-to-back five-set matches. His match against Lorenzo Musetti even lasted till 3 am.
