Roger Federer is back at the Australian Open for the first time since 2020. On Saturday, the Swiss maestro, who lifted six of his 20 Grand Slam titles in the first Major of the season, will be honored with a special ceremony at Melbourne Park.
On January 15, he sat for the press conference during which he commented on the current state of men’s tennis, which is only dominated by Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. Federer was a part of the crowd on Centre Court during Sinner versus Grigor Dimitrov‘s fourth-round clash last year, witnessing the Bulgarian take the first two sets off the Italian before tearing his right pectoral muscle and walking off the court in excruciating pain.
During the aforementioned press conference, Federer cited Dimitrov’s playing style to talk about how he would have liked to play against Sinner.
At Wimbledon, when Grigor was playing against Jannik, and I was sitting there, that made it easy to think how it could’ve been because Grigor plays very similar to how I played. I think it was one of the first times I thought how would it have been to play Jannik. When I saw Jannik play against Novak in Shanghai, I didn’t feel that way, I was just watching great tennis because they both played very different to how I play.

Sinner, after that scare, knocked out Ben Shelton and Novak Djokovic in the next two rounds, before he denied Alcaraz his third consecutive title in the grass-court Major. The record for most final wins at Wimbledon on the men’s tour belongs to Federer (eight).
Fedreer called time on his glorious career at the 2022 Laver Cup. It was at the Australian Open back in 2018 that he won his career’s final Grand Slam title.
Roger Federer backs Carlos Alcaraz to complete the Career Grand Slam at the Australian Open
The main draw of the Australian Open starts on January 18, and both Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz will be eyeing history. Sinner will become only the second man after Novak Djokovic in the Open Era to achieve the three-peat if he wins, while Alcaraz’s win will make him the youngest man in the Open Era to accomplish the Career Grand Slam.

Roger Federer completed his Career Grand Slam after winning the 2009 French Open- his career’s only title on the clay-court Major. His former arch-rival, Rafael Nadal, achieved the Grand Slam after winning the 2010 US Open at the age of 24, and this made him the youngest man to accomplish this feat. Alcaraz has the chance to surpass the 14-time Roland Garros champion and has the full backing of the 44-year-old for the same.
At his young age, completing the career Grand Slam would be crazy. Let’s see if he is able to do crazy this week. I hope he does because for the game it would be unbelievably special moment.

Sinner also has the chance to complete the Career Grand Slam. He already has the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open titles to his name. Last year at the French Open, despite a 2-0 set lead and three championship points, he ended up losing that epic thriller to Alcaraz.
At the Australian Open, while Sinner will be playing as the two-time defending champion, the 22-year-old has yet to progress beyond the quarterfinals, reaching the last eight in the previous two years, losing them to Alexander Zverev (2024) and Novak Djokovic (2025). In the 2024 and 2025 Melbourne finals, the four-time Grand Slam champion overcame Daniil Medvedev and Zverev, respectively.
Sinner and Alcaraz are the owners of the last eight Grand Slam titles. They met six times last year, with Sinner improving his head-to-head record over Alcaraz to 6-10 after defending his ATP Finals crown.
