Since the Monte-Carlo Masters, Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz have not been a part of the same draw. After losing the final to Sinner, Alcaraz played the Barcelona Open, only to injure his wrist during the opening round.
The injury has kept him on the sidelines since then. But Alcaraz is back. While the Spaniard has not yet played any official match, he will be seen in action on Tuesday (August 25) in mixed doubles. Alcaraz and Serena Williams will face Lloyd Glasspool and Erin Routliffe.
The singles event will start next week. But last year’s runner-up Jannik Sinner won’t be seen in action as he is now dealing with a knee injury. In Alcaraz’s absence, the five-time Grand Slam champion clinched the Madrid Open, Italian Open, and Wimbledon, which was also his sixth title of the season. Amid their tricky season, Roger Federer shared longevity advice when asked about their injury battles at the press conference.
But obviously the most unfortunate time to get hit with an injury is right before the French, and then you kind of miss French, Wimby because that comes in back-to-back, and then obviously it’s a struggle for the Open, and we see that we’ve seen that with Carlos. So, obviously I always try to keep a good schedule in terms of enough breaks. But that’s easier said than done. I took a lot of chances as well where I piled on maybe a couple more tournaments than I should have but kind of made it through the tournaments.
Federer will be playing a singles match against Andy Roddick and doubles with John McEnroe against the 2003 US Open champion and Andre Agassi in an exhibition event at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Tuesday (August 25).
So, I think it’s important to prioritize what’s important to you. That could be American swing here or Australia for the Aussies. And so, everybody has different times of the year when you want to peak because you can’t peak clearly 20 times a year. I think fans shouldn’t forget that as well. It’s hard to peak every single match.
Roger Federer added
Alcaraz is the defending champion in the New York Slam. He beat Sinner in four sets in last year’s final, winning his second title in the tournament.
Roger Federer wishes to play against Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner
At the press conference before his exhibition matches, Roger Federer was also asked which player from the current generation he would like to face. The Swiss maestro expressed his wish to face Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, both of whom never played Federer in official matches.

In today’s game, maybe Carlos. I think he’s exciting. I never got a chance to play against him or Sinner the same. We only practiced together a little bit as they were coming up. So, I missed that generation, unfortunately, a little bit.
It’s Sinner who has clinched the most titles on the tour this year. He, in fact, has added six Big Titles, including Wimbledon, to his trophy cabinet.
The 25-year-old was last seen in action in the final of the grass-court Major, where he defeated Alexander Zverev and defended his title. It’s Zverev who ended the Sincaraz duopoly in Majors after defeating Flavio Cobolli in the French Open final. Sascha is a former runner-up at Flushing Meadows, losing a five-set battle in 2020 to Dominic Thiem.
Alcaraz, before his injury hiatus, took home the Australian Open and the Qatar Open by defeating Novak Djokovic and Arthur Fils, respectively. If Alcaraz or Zverev win the US Open, the points they will earn won’t be enough to dethrone Sinner from the top of the rankings.
