Roger Federer in a recent interview stated how the players from the new generation are playing. From his observations, he found that there’s a lack of variation in youngsters.

The 43-year-old is in Berlin for the Laver Cup where Team Europe will clash against Team World. He landed in Berlin on September 17 and met the two captains of the teams, Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe. Ahead of the start of the tournament, Federer made an assessment of modern tennis.

I think the game is at the same level as before, maybe even a notch higher. Maybe there is a lack of variation, but it's because they are all two-handed, they don't use the slice as much these days. Naturally, we do not see so many cushions. Obviously, Alcaraz does it a little differently.
Roger Federer told reporters

The tournament was first held in 2017, and it was here in 2022 that Federer played his final match of his career, a doubles match with Rafael Nadal. Team Europe will look forward to breaking the winning streak of Team World as the latter won in the past two editions of the tournament, held in London and Vancouver respectively.

Carlos Alcaraz is also a part of Team Europe and the 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer, who has never seen the 21-year-old play and “barely” knows him, is looking forward to watching his game. The four-time Grand Slam champion will play his first game on September 20 in a doubles match with Alexander Zverev against two Americans, Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton

I only practiced once with him at Wimbledon when he was still a junior, and then the next day, my coach said, ‘Do you want to warm up with him again?’ and I said, ‘No, it’s okay, I’d rather warm up with his coach, who was my generation, Juan Carlos Ferrero.’ I can apologize to Carlos this week.

Before the Laver Cup, Alcaraz shockingly lost in the second round at the US Open after clinching the silver medal at the Paris Olympics. In the Laver Cup, the first match of the group stage on September 20 at Berlin’s Uber Arena is between Casper Ruud and Francisco Cerundolo. Thanasi Kokkinakis will then next take on Stefanos Tsitsipas, followed by the clash between Grigor Dimitrov and Alejandro Tabilo
