Rohit Sharma sheds light on Ravichandran Ashwin’s future in white-ball cricket

India’s newly-appointed limited-overs cricket skipper Rohit Sharma has talked about spinner Ravichandran Ashwin’s future. The latter made a comeback in white-ball cricket during the 2021 ICC T20 World Cup in the UAE.

The 35-year-old had a successful campaign where he not just emerged economically, but also regularly ticked the wickets column. Following this, he was also picked for the three-match home T20 series against the Kiwis.

During a recent media interaction, Sharma heaped massive praises for Aswhin while mentioning that he brings flexibility into the side. He stated that the veteran off-break bowler has the ability to bowl “anytime and anywhere in whatever situation” during the game in ODIs and T20Is.

“Ashwin will give you that flexibility, you can use him in the powerplay or the middle over, so having a bowler like that – an all-rounder bowler I’d like to call – who can bowl anytime and anywhere in whatever situation, is always important,” Sharma was quoted as saying while speaking to journalist Boria Majumdar on ‘Backstage with Boria’.

“You don’t want one-dimensional bowlers”

The Nagpur-born further went on to reckon that the team doesn’t need one-dimensional bowlers, who can bowl in just a particular situation.

“You don’t want one-dimensional bowlers where you know he can only bowl outside powerplay, he cannot bowl in the death, can only bowl to right-handers, can only bowl to left-handers. The more options you have with bowlers the better, that’s what I felt,” he added.

Rohit Sharma concluded the chat while saying that the Tamil Nadu cricketer is a great addition to the team. Notably, R Ashwin has claimed as many as nine wickets in five matches since his comeback in the shortest format of the game.

“I thought he’d be a great addition, and I think he’s here to stay. He’s definitely here to stay,” Sharma signed off.
