The ATP stars will head to Shanghai, China, for the Masters 1000 tournament, which kicks off on October 1st. The 2025 edition of the tournament will be headlined by Jannik Sinner, Alexander Zverev, Taylor Fritz, Ben Shelton, and Novak Djokovic. The prestigious hard-court event will be played at Qi Zhong Center.
The Shanghai Masters has a rich history of attracting the world’s best players and promising young talents. In fact, it has been voted as ATP Masters 1000 Tournament of the Year for five straight seasons. The oldest champion of the event was Roger Federer and he made the record in 2017 at 36.
Djokovic has won the tournament a record four times on tour, and he’s currently seeking a fifth at the tournament. He was close to breaking Federer’s record and extending his tally last year after reaching the final, but he fell to Sinner, who became the youngest champion (23-year-old) of the tournament.
Sinner is the top seed at the Shanghai Masters after Carlos Alcaraz withdrew due to some physical issues. The Spaniard had participated in the Tokyo Open, where he had an injury scare after twisting his ankle during his first-round encounter against Sebastian Baez. He went on to win the ATP 500 tournament following his win over Taylor Fritz.
Daniil Medvedev is expected to compete at the tournament having won it in 2019. He played at the just-concluded China Open, where he suffered cramps during his semi-final clash against Learner Tien. He was forced to retire in the second round, leaving the American star to face Sinner in the final.
Sinner will be seeking to win his fourth title of the season. The World No. 2’s path to victory at the Rolex Shanghai Masters got easier after Alcaraz decided to withdraw on Tuesday (September 30). Alcaraz is the only player who can allegedly beat Sinner in any event on tour; the likes of Djokovic, Fritz, and Zverev have failed to do so in the past two years.
However, the Shanghai Masters is the second-to-last ATP 1000 tournament of the year, so players often use it as an opportunity to end the season on a positive note, while others hope to boost their chances at qualifications for the year-ending ATP Finals in Turin, which Alcaraz and Sinner have qualified for.
