Rome Masters 2021: Day 6- Djokovic, Nadal, Tsitsipas, Zverev all march; Berrettini, FAA, Thiem fall short

Zverev, Nadal, Tsitsipas and Djokovic

Day 6 of the Rome Masters saw all the Round of 16 taking place. While Novak Djokovic cruised into the Last 8 quite convincingly, Rafael Nadal and Alexander Zverev had to dig dip.

Djokovic eases past Fokina

World No.1 Novak Djokovic stormed into the Madrid Masters quarter-finals on Thursday with a straight sets wins over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. It was a fairly easy outing for the five-time Rome champion as he won in straight sets 6-2, 6-1 in 1hr 10min against the 48th-ranked Spaniard.

Novak said: “He started well, but I managed to break back straight away and establish the control and consistency. I thought I played at least 20-30 percent better than on Monday.”

Nadal survives Shapovalov scare

It was a Rafael Nadal masterclass on the center court, as he once trailed by 0-4 in the opening set and 0-3 in the second, managed to save two match points late in the third set to close out the match in 3 hrs 27 mins with a scoreline of 3-6,6-4,7-6(3) against Denis Shapovalov.

Nadal said: “To be able to win these kinds of matches against young players gives me confidence with my body. It’s true that I have to do things better for tomorrow. But the main thing today for me is [to] recover physically.”

Tsitsipas cruises past Berrettini

It was heartbreak for the local fans as Matteo Berrettini bowed out of the competition in the hands of Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets 6-7(3), 2-6. The serve, which was the Italian’s power all tournament let him down against the Greek. The Greek will play top seed Novak Djokovic in the quarter-final.

Tsitsipas said: “He[Djokovic] can play on all surfaces. We played each other at Roland Garros. I see this as an opportunity for me to do something better this time. I hope to be able to play the same tennis that I have been playing so far and be a challenge for him.”

Zverev pushed to the limit by Nishikori

It was a lucky escape for Alexander Zverev in the Round of 16 as he defeated former World No.4 Kei Nishikori coming from a set down to win 4-6,6-3,6-4. The German was down 1-3 in the second set and 1-4 in the third but somehow managed to hold nerve and get past the Japanese.

Thiem knocked out by Sonego

Crowd favorite Lorenzo Sonego battled past World no.4 Dominic Thiem in 3hrs 24 mins to make it to the quarter-finals in Rome. The Italian was down 3-5 in the final set but broke Thiem’s serve to level 6-6. He eventually held nerve to win a late night tie-breaker, setting up a QF clash against Andrey Rublev.
