It will be a second round blockbuster in Foro Italico, as the ‘King of Clay’ Rafael Nadal will take on home favorite and teen sensation Jannik Sinner in the second round. Nadal comes into the tournament as a favorite to lift his record 10th title in Rome.
Rafa is coming off a poor outing in Madrid where he lost to Alexander Zverev in the quarter-final. Excpet 2020 and 2015, Nadal has atleast won any one of the Masters 1000 tournament on Clay(Monte Carlo, Madrid, Rome) and he would want to win Rome before defending his title at Paris.
As for his 19 year-old opponent, Jannik Sinner, it has been a dream year. He made it to the quarter-final of the French Open last year and has never looked back since. He won his first tour title earlier this year at Adelaide.
He has been playing good this Clay season too except his early round exit in Madrid. He reached the semi-final of the Barcelona Open and lost to Novak Djokovic in Monte Carlo.

This will be the second meeting between the duo. Nadal leads the H2H 1-0. They met at Roland Garros last year where Nadal won in straight sets.

The match is between two different generations. Sinner has grown up watching Nadal dominate the tennis world and defeating him would be one of his biggest dream and achievement. He would also have a backing of home crowd and would want to just go out and play positive tennis.
Nadal has been hot and cold this season. He has been handed a very tricky draw at Rome and it should provide him perfect practice ahead of the French Open. Sinner should give him a tough time but expect Nadal to up him game and cruise into the Round of 16.
Prediction: Nadal to win in straight sets.
