Ronaldo’s brace not enough to carry Juventus through to the quarterfinals
juve vs lyon
Juventus forward Critiano Ronaldo scored twice in Juve’s 2-1 UCL second leg (round 16) victory over Lyon. However his brace was not enough to guide Juve through to the quarterfinals as Lyon bagged themselves an important away goal. The Bianconeris went 1-0 down within 12 minutes after the kickoff. The referee awarded Lyon a highly controversial penalty, when Aouar was bought down by Bentancur in Juve’s penalty area. Memphis Depay scored the penalty in calm and composed fashion helping the visitors grab a precious away goal.
Ronaldo gave his club a ray of hope, when he converted from the spot just before halftime. The Portuguese forward struck again through a magnificent long range effort in 60th minute. Juventus started pressing really well after getting their second goal. Alex Sandro attacked and overlapped from defense to offence, time and time again trying to provide Juve’s third goal. Neither Juventus nor Ronaldo could get the crucial third goal that would’ve sent them through to the quarterfinals.
Juventus had a total of 63% of the ball possession and often looked dominating. The Bianconeris also had more shots on target. Dybala had to subbed off just minutes after his inclusion in the second half. The Argentine seemed to have aggravated his knee injury, which kept him out of the starting lineup.
With today’s brace Ronaldo broke a 95 years old goal scoring record. Ronaldo has become the highest goal scorer for Juventus in a single season with 37 goals.
Juventus seemed to be missing Douglas Costa , who was out of the tie due to injury. Now Olympique Lyonnais will face Manchester City in a UEFA Champions League quarterfinal.
