The duo become the first set of rookies since 2014 to be All-Stars.
Rookies Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese headline WNBA All-Star as they script basketball history as 1st pair from same draft class since 2014
Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese were supposed to be struggling in the WNBA. That is what league legend Sheryl Swoopes predicted months before either of them declared for the Draft. Fast forward to today, and both of them have become the only rookies from this draft class to become All-Stars —that too from outright voting and not as reserves or replacements.
The WNBA announced through their official channels that both rookies are first-time All-Stars. This marks the first time in a decade that two rookies from the same draft class are All-Stars. Their nomination is a result of votes from fans, current WNBA players, and broadcasters. Clark topped the list of All-Star fan votes, while Reese was added as one of the top 36 players in the league.
This will be a history setting achievement for both as they will take on Team USA Women’s basketball team in the All-Star game scheduled for July 20th. The All-Star game will be held on Friday. Prior to that, the WNBA 3-Point Contest as well as the Skills challenges will take place. The 3-point challenge was the stage that setup Sabrina Ionescu to set a new record and achieve worldwide fame.
Since then, the WNBA has been on a roll as more and more fans are flocking to watch their games. This year’s All-Star game will also mark the first occasion both Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese will play as teammates.
Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese continue to set records
Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese are continuing to debunk Sheryl Swoopes’ theory not only with their All-Star selections, but also with their play on the court. Reese is already the new record holder for double-doubles among rookies all-time. But she is also topping the WNBA leaderboard with rebounds per game. As she continues to grow and play better, she could eventually set a new rookie all-time rebounding record.
The same can be said about Clark. Currently she is leading all WNBA players in assists. As she too continues to understand her teammates movements better, she could eventually become the assist record holder too. Yes, in order to make that happen, her teammates have to be more aware of her unreal array of passes. As of now most of them are making it to the turnover sheet.
It will not be long before these two take the WNBA to a different stratosphere. Their play is already turning heads. Now with the All-Star selection, it will only go on to help the league leaps and bounds.
