Reports have emerged that claim the reason behind the end of one of the most successful coaching partnerships, between Carlos Alcaraz and Juan Carlos Ferrero, is the new contract. Alcaraz has parted ways with his coach of seven years, to the utter astonishment of the tennis community.
As per Marca, the new collaboration agreement was the root cause of the split. The Spanish coach received the new contract on Saturday morning and was given just 48 hours to accept or reject it.
There was a great deal of salary reduction, but that was not one of the problems. Fererro was not ready to accept certain clauses, and on Monday, the deadline ended. A couple of days later, Alcaraz took to his social media to announce that he will no longer be working with the 45-year-old.
Insiders claim Alcaraz was not responsible for the breakup, that the decision to part ways with Ferrero was taken by his inner circle. Ferrero had been part of Alcaraz’s team since 2018, and under him, the 22-year-old not only became a World No.1 and won six Grand Slam titles, but also won all his 24 tour-level singles trophies.
Rafael Nadal‘s former coach, Toni Nadal, thinks the decision to part ways after such a successful season was not “logical”. Alcaraz’s childhood coach, Kiko Navarro, said the Murica native is very protective of his coaches, that he doesn’t think it was Alcaraz who wanted to end the partnership. Alcaraz, during his formative years, was coached by Carlos Santos. With Navarro, Alcaraz worked until he was 17.
Luke Saville thinks money could be the reason behind the Carlos Alcaraz-Juan Carlos Ferrero split
WTA ace Daria Saville and her husband, Luke Saville, joined the discussion about the possible reasons that led to the Carlos Alcaraz–Juan Carlos Ferrero split. Both Ferrero and Alcaraz shared on their respective social media accounts to announce the split. Ferrero wrote that he would have liked to continue. Luke thinks the reason could be financial issues.

Two very heartfelt messages there. The very interesting one at the end of Ferrero’s quote, ‘I wish I could have continued’, leads you to think they didn’t end on great terms there. Something may have happened there. I guess we’re here for hot takes, aren’t we? Maybe Ferrero wasn’t happy with some of Carlos’ decisions? Playing a lot of exhos. I think we’ve spoken about that quite a bit. Maybe Juan Carlos wanted a few more weeks to train and work on his game, to keep up with Jannik. Maybe that could have been a contributing factor.

The next major event that Alcaraz will play is next year’s Australian Open, where he has never advanced to the semifinals. This year, he lost to Novak Djokovic in four sets in the quarterfinals. Alcaraz will be bidding to complete the Career Grand Slam in the Melbourne Major.
I don’t think he’ll change much, at least for the summer. I think he’ll sort of keep the same team he has had with him, and then probably start trialing some coaches.
Luke Saville added
Before the Australian Open, the six-time Grand Slam champion will be in Incheon, South Korea, for an exhibition event where he will lock horns with Jannik Sinner. The main draw of the Australian Open kicks off on January 18.
This season, Alcaraz lifted eight titles from 11 finals- the most on the men’s tour. Two of the titles he lifted at the French Open and the US Open by defeating Sinner. He also reached the championship clash of the ATP Finals, but failed to go past the four-time Grand Slam champion.
