The 2024 NFL season kicked off with the Kansas City Chiefs defeating the Baltimore Ravens 27-20. The Ravens, now 1-5 in their last six games against the Chiefs, are clearly struggling after yet another tough loss to their AFC rivals.
The rivalry between Baltimore and Kansas City was well-reflected in the post-game press conference when the linebacker Roquan Smith didn’t hold back from accusing quarterback Patrick Mahomes of flopping and being shoved by a player he didn’t know. He was referring to the Chiefs tight end Peyton Hendershot, who was listed as inactive and appeared in causal clothes at the Arrowhead stadium.
He (Patrick Mahomes) flopped. Yeah, he flopped. That's why the referees didn't call it. It was a great no-call by the ref. But, whoever 88 is, I don't know who he is, but he better watch himself. He did a little slick push. Whoever No. 88 is, I have no idea who he is, but I'll see him when I see him.Roquan Smith said
The incident that Smith was referring to happened during the fourth quarter of Thursday’s game, when he found himself in a sideline altercation after the Chiefs superstar sustained a questionable hit.
He was shoved by Smith while running towards the sidelines. However, as it was observed to be late, Chiefs TE Hendershot didn’t stay put and retaliated by shoving the Ravens linebacker, despite being inactive for the game.
Lamar Jackson disappointed after review rules Isaiah Likely’s toe out of bounds
At the final play in the fourth quarter, when the Ravens’ Isaiah Likely attempted his second last touchdown in the red zone, it went into review with the question if Likely landed on the end line. The whole stadium waited in anticipation and when the announcement from the officials finally came, quarterback Lamar Jackson could only shake his head.
The officials found Likely landed on the end line on his toe, touching the white out-of-bounds line, which further resulted in a poor 27-20 defeat against the conference rivals.
I thought it was a touchdown. I still think it's a touchdown.Lamar Jackson said in his post game conference
It was initially ruled that Likely landed both his feet in bounds before the boundary of the end zone, which would have given the Ravens an advantage to win the two-point conversion that head coach John Harbaugh signaled his team to do. However, when the final ruling came, the Ravens didn’t get the chance to execute it and had to settle for a defeat.
