The 2025 Masters Tournament at the Augusta National Golf Course provided one of the biggest storylines in golf history. Rory McIlroy finally overcame his demons of this event and took home the green jacket and also completed the career grand slam. On Wednesday, he opened up about the emotional ‘mess‘ he was in after winning this tournament.
The Masters was the one event that had eluded McIlroy for a long time. He was also on a decade-long major championship drought, having last won a major in August 2014.
In the Masters Tournament this year, McIlroy bounced back with a score of 66 in both Round 2 and 3. During the final round, there were some moments, where he slipped, like the par putt on the final hole.
Despite the setbacks, he managed to defeat Justin Rose in the playoffs to finally win this prestigious event. His win saw him become just the 6th player in golf history to win all 4 major championships and complete the career grand slam.
After taking part in the 2025 Zurich Classic of New Orleans alongside Shane Lowry, McIlroy is now preparing to take part in his first singles competition since that win at the Augusta National. During the press conference of the Truist Championship, the now 5-time major champion revealed that he was in an emotional mess with his parents after his victory.
With my dad, like I never get that emotional with my dad. It was great. It was great to see him. Then when I saw my mom, I yeah, we were both a mess for a few minutes.

Rory McIlroy reveals ‘cool’ 5-word message he received from Tiger Woods after completing the career grand slam
Rory McIlroy winning the Masters Tournament and completing the career grand slam saw several golfers and celebrities congratulate him. One of them who congratulated was 15-time major champion and his TGL partner, Tiger Woods. In a recent appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, McIlroy revealed the ‘cool’ 5-word message he received from him.

Before McIlroy achieved this feat, Woods was the last player to complete the career grand slam. Statistically, Woods has completed the career grand slam 3 times as he has won all the majors at least three times.
While speaking with Jimmy Fallon, McIlroy claimed that he received a 5-word, “Welcome to the club, kid” message from Woods.
He said, ‘Welcome to the club, kid,’ which was just so cool. Six people ever have achieved the Grand Slam in golf. Only four of us are living. You know, Gary Player is 90 years old, Jack (Nicklaus) is 85 or 86, then there’s Tiger and myself. It’s really cool to be a part of.

McIlroy stated that he even got some congratulation messages from people whom he didn’t think even had an idea about golf. One of them was popular singer Elton John.
Whom is Rory McIlroy paired up with at the Truist Championship?
Rory McIlroy will make his first singles start since winning the Masters Tournament at the Truist Championship at the Philadelphia Cricket Club’s Wissahickon Course. In the first two rounds, he has been paired up with two big names on the PGA Tour.

For the first two rounds, the 36-year-old has been paired up with former World No.1 Justin Thomas, who recently broke his winless run, and one of his 2023 Ryder Cup teammates, Tommy Fleetwood. The trio will tee off at 11:26 a.m. Eastern Time in the first round.
Since the Truist Championship is a signature event, it does not feature a cut. This means McIlroy and the others will get the chance to play all 72 holes of this tournament. Following this, some of them will gear up for the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow, a course where McIlroy has won 4 times.
