The 2025 Ryder Cup is now just a few days away. Ahead of this massive showdown between Team Europe and Team USA in New York, Rory McIlroy has hit back at Bryson DeChambeau. The reigning Masters Champion sounded off on the LIV Golfer this weekend.

Ahead of the premiere of Adam Sandler‘s Happy Gilmore 2, which features both McIlroy and DeChambeau, the LIV Golf star issued a warning to the 5-time major champion. DeChambeau claimed that he would chirp McIlroy in his ear if he got the chance to do it.

These words from DeChambeau came after he received a cold treatment from McIlroy during the final round of the Masters Tournament this year. The two of them were the final pairing and headed into the Augusta National Golf Course on Sunday, aiming to capture their maiden Masters title.

In the final round, McIlroy would focus on the game and did not speak to his playing partner at all. The Northern Irish golfer ended up winning the tournament through a playoff round and completed the career grand slam.

Ahead of the event this week, McIlroy was asked about DeChambeau’s comment at the premiere of Happy Gilmore 2. While speaking to The Guardian, the World No.2 claimed that DeChambeau only gets attention when he mentions someone’s name.

I think the only way he gets attention is by mentioning other people. That is basically what I think of that. To get attention he will mention me or Scottie (Scheffler) or others.

The two golfers have developed a heated rivalry in the past couple of years. Before their Masters showdown, the two of them battled it out at the Pinehurst Course during the 2024 U.S. Open.

In the final round of that major, McIlroy missed two close-range putts. This opened the door for DeChambeau to sweep in. The Crushers GC captain went on to win the claim his 2nd major title by finishing one shot ahead of McIlroy.

McIlroy was involved in a major altercation during the 2023 edition in Rome. In the final fourball match on Day 2, McIlroy would team up with Matt Fitzpatrick to take on Patrick Cantlay and Wyndham Clark.

Cantlay, who had been mocked the entire day for not sporting a cap, would keep his composure towards the end and sink a crucial long birdie putt on the 18th hole to win the point for his team.

During the celebrations, his caddie Joe LaCava, would take his hat off and celebrate on the greens. This did not sit well with the former World No.1, and he got involved in an argument with him.

After things settled down on the greens, the action picked up in the parking lot. McIlroy could be seen angrily reacting and being dragged away by Shane Lowry.

The 36-year-old believes that things could get heated once again this year, especially given the course they are playing in. The Bethpage Course will be filled with New Yorkers, who are expected to give the Europeans a hard time.

I think it’s inevitable something is going to happen in New York. It might not involve me but it is inevitable that something will happen, whether like in Rome last time or something else

Captain Luke Donald has given McIlroy and his teammates Virtual Reality (VR) headsets to simulate the crowd noise in New York. This is done by him to help his team tackle the heckling that will be thrown at them in the 3 days of the competition.

Team Europe will head into the event as defending champions and hope to go back-to-back. They have not won on American soil since their victory in Medinah, Illinois, in 2012.
