With the East Asia Pacific qualifiers set to begin for the upcoming T20I World Cup, there is some exciting news for team Samoa and its fans. The side will have a celebrated international player with 450 international matches under his belt join the team.
Former New Zealand player and captain Ross Taylor has confirmed that he will be joining Samoa and will be playing for an international team apart from New Zealand for the first time. Taylor has experience of over a hundred games in each of the three formats.
At the age of 41, Ross Taylor will return to international cricket after a gap of over three years. He had announced his retirement from international cricket for New Zealand back in April 2022. In a recent Instagram post, Taylor shared his excitement about donning the colors of Samoa.
It’s official – I’m proud to announce that I’ll be pulling on the blue and representing Samoa in cricket. This is more than just a return to the game I love – it’s the huge honor to represent my heritage, culture, villages, and family.
Ross Taylor wrote
Taylor has a personal link to Samoa through a family member of his. The batter, in addition to his New Zealand identity, also holds a Samoan passport. He inherited this from his mother, and it made him eligible to play for the new side.
I’m excited for the opportunity to give back to the game, join the squad, and share my experience on and off the field.
Ross Taylor added
With his incredible experience in the T20 format, Taylor would be the ideal inspiration the team would crave for to make it to the World Cup. Taylor, who himself is an ICC event winner, knows a thing or two about big events and can be extremely valuable to the team’s success.
Ross Taylor still amongst the top run scorers for New Zealand despite retiring in 2020
Ross Taylor, with his slog over mid-wicket, has been one of the best T20 players of his time. His heights were so pristine that despite retiring from the format five years ago, he still is New Zealand’s fifth highest run scorer in the format with 1909 runs to his name.

With his return to international cricket after three years, many would question his fitness and cricketing ability to contribute with the bat. If one has to go by his numbers in the format, there is no doubt that the cricketing ability would take care of itself. His cricketing intelligence would also be right up there, as he was involved in the game by doing coaching stints at the Big Bash League.
However, maintaining his fitness right through might be a key concern. With the game having changed leaps and bounds since his retirement and the fast-paced nature of sport, it might not be an easy return. T20I cricket often has matches being held back-to-back, and a schedule like that could be taxing for the 41-year-old athlete.
Samoa, with limited experience as an international team, will have to carefully manage the workload of its new star. Any over excitedness that might lead to exertion can be a tricky situation for both the team and Taylor himself.
Taylor, with his incredible consistency over the years, has left a great legacy in New Zealand. With over 18000 international runs, the batter has shown greatness with his bat. In his final rush of blood for international cricket, fans would like to see him leave a similar legacy for his new country as well.
