The Minnesota Timberwolves Rudy Gobert recently shared a heart-breaking story in a piece he wrote for the Players’ Tribune. The player opened up about his struggles during childhood as well as through his career. Gobert revealed he faced racism from his mother’s family while growing up.

Rudy Gobert is biracial as his mother is white and his father is black. His mother’s family was not happy with the player’s skin color to the extent that they would not include him in their Christmas celebration. Gobert’s mother was asked to leave him behind.

After I was born, certain relatives made it very clear to her that she wasn’t welcome to come to Christmas dinner if she brought me along.

The family’s behavior towards Gobert caused his mother to break ties with them. Further, the three-time All-Star wrote about his relationship with his mother who raised him in his father’s absence and protected him. As the athlete went through some tough times early in his life, Gobert certainly hoped for a better future.

The star has now succeeded in making a good life for himself. Gobert this year is making $41 Million at the Minnesota Timberwolves. Also, his dominant performance on the opposite side of the court has made him the defensive player of the year thrice. The star plays an essential role for one of the top teams in the Western Conference.

Rudy Gobert shed light on dreaming about playing in the NBA

Due to the financial hardships Gobert went through in childhood, the player always dreamt of being successful. The center had the aim of taking control of his life in the future. But at the time, the star was not focused on basketball, as that came much later.

In the Players’ Tribune piece, Gobert revealed that by the time he was 12, the athlete was consumed by basketball. The star had his room’s walls filled with NBA posters as he imagined playing against the greats of the game.

I would close my eyes and imagine myself on an NBA floor — dunking the ball, guarding legends like Kobe, Tony, Dirk, STAT.
