Gilbert Arenas and Rudy Gobert

Rudy Gobert received much criticism for his performances in the 2024 NBA playoffs. The Minnesota Timberwolves center struggled against Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks. Ultimately, his team faced a brutal 4-1 Western Conference Finals exit. In the aftermath, Gilbert Arenas apologized to Rudy Gobert for criticizing him for missing a playoff game to attend the birth of his first child.

In his apology, Arenas claimed that Gobert’s defense didn’t factor in the playoffs and that his family needed him more. However, Arenas’ apology was laced with sarcasm and mocking comments about Gobert’s defensive performance in the playoffs.

Rudy Gobert, I apologize to you and your family, to your new born, and the mother of the child. You did right by staying home and missing that game. I was wrong, I thought you was needed. They didn't need you, your family needed you. Cause the defense you playing out here is probably the same you was doing in that hospital, sitting around.

Gilbert Arenas had previously criticized Gobert for missing Game 2 of the Western Conference semifinal series against the Denver Nuggets, where he said that his baby would still be there after the game. Despite Gobert’s absence, the Timberwolves won the game 106-80 and went on to win the series in seven games.

Gobert’s decision to miss the game to attend the birth of his child received praise and criticism. However, Arenas’ initial criticism met with backlash. Despite this, Arenas continued to mock Gobert’s defensive performance, showing that his apology was not entirely sincere.

Rudy Gobert faced criticism for missing a playoff game to attend his first child’s birth. The French star spoke briefly about the criticism he received. Gobert reasoned that the criticism of his poor play remains justified. However, that does not give someone the right to criticize him for doing his familial obligations.

This is one thing I decided I was never going to miss in my life. I love this game. I dedicated my whole life to this game. But this is one thing that is above that. And that's being there for the birth of my child. I think everyone in this locker room understands that. I think everyone is allowed to have an opinion. I think everyone's definition of fatherhood is different. At the end of the day, I'll do what I think is best for my family and for me.

Gobert is focused on achieving his dreams of one day winning a championship and being a good father. The French star and his team will need to start over next season after losing in the WCF. Rumors also suggest a possible split of the current Timberwolves team due to luxury tax problems. As such, all eyes remain on Gobert and how he performs next season.
