The series opener between the Los Angeles Clippers and the Phoenix Suns was basketball entertainment at its peak. With the series promising to be an exciting prospect among NBA fans, the game was a sensational nail-biter. Russell Westbrook’s rock-hard defensive play restricted the Suns to a five-point deficit as the Clippers emerged victorious away from home. The final score was 110-115 at the end of regulation.

Before Westbrook shot two tight clutch free throws, his shooting was far below impressive. The guard was 3-19 for field goals and 1-6 for three-pointers. A stat line that was bound to be discussed, Westbrook got a question from a reporter during the post-game press conference. The reporter pointed out the coincidence with Westbrook’s field goals stat line. Westbrook replied laughing saying “I’ll go for that,” while talking about shooting 3-19 again.

Westbrook went 3-19 with the Washington Wizards in the 2021-22 NBA playoffs against the Philadelphia 76ers. In a game that was a must-win game to stay alive in the series, the guard shot at the exact same number and his team won the game. Westbrook mentioned that if that’s a secret number, then he doesn’t mind shooting 3-19 again as his team won on both occasions. “I don’t know, but I guess that’s a secret number. We won both games, so shit, if it works, then hey, I’ll go for that,” he said.

Russell Westbrook is one of those point guards who stands unbothered about his scoring percentage. However, does the Clippers’ management think about his scoring rate as a liability? That would be an answer in the negative as Clippers head coach Tyronn Lue spoke addressed this topic in the post-game press conference. “I told him during the game, ‘Your scoring is not that important. Don’t get frustrated with missing shots. You bring us way more than just scoring the basketball. Don’t let that affect your game.'”

It is evident that Westbrook seems to feel no pressure of scoring. However, he does provide a little assistance to Kawhi Leonard who has the bulk of the responsibility to pick up points. Westbrook even spoke about how he’s the best rebounding point guard in the NBA and that it’s the will to win that makes him such a good rebounder. “It’s the will to win. Be able to make plays. At this position, humbly speaking, nobody’s a better rebounder than me.”

Although the Clippers have picked up a crucial road win, they realize that the series is far from over. The Suns are a heavily stacked and talented team and will not drop their shoulders so easily. Devin Booker along with Chris Paul and Kevin Durant will look to make a strong comeback against LA. Needless to say, Game 2 will be even more exciting to watch.
