- Russell Westbrook and his wife received death threats from a fan over a failed sports bet.
- The Sacramento Kings are experiencing a franchise-record 15-game losing streak.
- Fans are calling for the NBA to enhance player safety amid rising issues related to sports betting.
There was a time during this past offseason when Russell Westbrook was left in a dilemma about his future in the NBA, as not many teams came forward with interest in signing him.
Last season’s locker room problems with the Denver Nuggets may have fueled the disinterest, as franchises do not want any player negatively affecting the team.
That led Russell Westbrook to wait and then sign with the Sacramento Kings, who were the only team to express keen interest in adding the former league MVP to their roster.
Even though there were some exciting moments, the team has been anything but a contender, and is now being seen as a franchise that is intentionally tanking in the hopes of landing a high draft pick.
Every year, teams resume practice after the All-Star break to try to start a winning streak. Instead, the Kings lost again, this time to the inconsistent Orlando Magic.
The negative effects of sports betting. Brings out the worst in people somehow.

Fans rage after Russell Westbrook and his wife become targets of bettors
Sports betting has always been a problem, and it has become more aggravated after the NBA collaborated with betting companies to make it legal.
Players have voiced their opinions in the past, but the league has not done enough to safeguard them. Fans believe that it is high time that the NBA does what is needed to keep players and their families safe.
They felt that getting ill wishes or death threats should not be the byproduct of the league’s interest in cashing in on sports betting. Check out examples of such reactions below.

The NBA, with the aid of law enforcement and betting companies, has been cracking down on players and coaches who are trying to find dubious ways to win illegally. At the same time, fans believe the league should also protect the likes of Russell Westbrook and others from such threats.
Russell Westbrook’s Kings lost franchise-record number of games
In mid-January, Russell Westbrook and the Sacramento Kings put together a run of four impressive wins. They were against the Houston Rockets, the Los Angeles Lakers, the New York Knicks, and the Washington Wizards.

That was an impressive haul, even if it was at home, as the first three teams are in playoff contention and are also vying to win the 2026 NBA championship.
Such a run suggested that maybe the Kings are about to turn a corner. Alas, that was not to be, as they started a losing streak that continued when Russell Westbrook and his teammates lost to the Orlando Magic at home.
That marks the 15th straight loss for them, which also happens to be a franchise record. Naturally, injuries have played their part, as Domantas Sabonis and Zach LaVine are done for the season.

Now, trade deadline acquisition De’Andre Hunter will also end his season early. This could lead them to lose more games, as they are about to embark on a five-game road trip, three of which are against playoff teams.
