Since the announcement of the WBC super lightweight between Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia, the latter showed erratic behavior. As the undefeated former undisputed lightweight champion, Haney was already a favorite after the fight announcement. However, as Garcia, who lost his undefeated charm to Gervonta Davis, began to show signs of mental struggle, the odds widened.

To make matters worse, Garcia weighed 143.2 lbs for the 140 lbs fight, whereas Haney weighed right at 140 lbs. To make it even worse, Garcia showed no remorse for the weight miss. Moreover, he even chugged beer after missing the weight. Oscar De La Hoya‘s face at the weigh-ins showed what every boxing fan had in mind.

De La Hoya had earlier stated in his appearance on the Pound 4 Pound podcast that Garcia would knock Haney out. However, at the weigh-ins, his facial expressions revealed the opposite. Nonetheless, after the weight miss, the two teams made a deal to proceed with the fight. Garcia would not be able to win the title, but the belt would become vacant if Garcia won.

A percentage of Garcia’s fight purse would now go to Haney. Moreover, Garcia and Haney had a bet that every 1 lb weight miss would give the opponent $500,000. Garica has agreed to the $1.5 million bet, an indicator that he would get multi-millions for the fight.

Fight fans react to Ryan Garcia’s unhinged behavior

When facing Gervonta Davis, Ryan Garcia suffered his first professional boxing defeat. He lost the fight in the 7th round after a body shot from Davis. Garcia had an injury ahead of the fight and even had troubles with the weight cut due to a rehydration clause.

In their seventh fight overall and first in professional boxing, De La Hoya had predicted that the duo would enter the realm of Floyd Mayweather, Conor McGregor, and Manny Pacquiao. Nevertheless, Garcia’s behavior has made fight fans see the fight as a foregone conclusion.
