“She was an inspiring talent”: 17-year-old Tunisian Olympic Sailor Eya Guezguez dies in tragic accident

17-year-old Tunisian Olympic sailor Eya Guezguez died in a tragic accident, announced the IOC on Monday. The young girl was training with the national team as well as her twin sister Sarra Guezguez, when the boat capsized.
Unfortunately as the boat capsized her sister Sarra survived, while Eya did not. The twins together competed at the Tokyo Olympics in the 49er FX and finished 21st.

Thomas Bach, president of the International Olympic Committee, said he was shocked by the news. “She was an inspiring talent and role model for her athletes’ generation,” Bach said to cbc.ca.
“Eya Guezguez’s participation at Tokyo 2020 alongside her twin sister Sarra will continue to motivate girls everywhere. Our thoughts are with her family, friends and the Olympic community in Tunisia.”
