In Short
  • Sanju Samson is a leading candidate to replace Suryakumar Yadav as India's T20I captain following the 2026 T20 World Cup.
  • The BCCI selection committee is expected to discuss leadership changes due to Yadav's poor form and age.
  • Samson's strong performance in the T20 World Cup and impressive IPL season with CSK bolster his captaincy prospects.

A change in the leadership of the Indian T20I team is expected, with Suryakumar Yadav soon to be replaced. Recent reports suggest that Sanju Samson, the Player of the Tournament from the 2026 T20 World Cup, is the leading choice for the captaincy.

The BCCI-appointed men’s selection committee, headed by Ajit Agarkar, is scheduled to meet to finalize plans for the remainder of the international cricketing calendar. What might, however, be the most critical item on the agenda is the potential leadership shuffle in the Indian T20I setup, with captain Suryakumar Yadav to be removed. His poor batting form and age might be the reasons behind his removal.

Initial reports had positioned Shreyas Iyer as the front-runner, primarily because of his proven captaincy record in the IPL. However, the 31-year-old has not played a T20I since 2023. In fact, Iyer has only played 51 T20Is in his career, relatively low compared to other experienced players in the current squad. The consensus among selectors is that he must first cement his place in the playing XI before he can be considered for a leadership role.

With Iyer’s prospects slim, Sanju Samson has emerged as a serious contender to become India’s next T20I captain, with sources suggesting that he might be handed the baton for a brief trial run during the upcoming series against Ireland and England.

Samson’s case has been bolstered by a host of factors, the most notable being his 2026 T20 WC performance. Despite being initially dropped from the playing XI due to a string of low scores, the 31-year-old staged a comeback and was ultimately named POTS.

Samson turned into a hero after helping India win the T20 WC with strong batting displays, in the Super Eights against West Indies (97* off 50), semi-final against England (89 off 42), and final against New Zealand (89 off 46). Although the wicket-keeper batter is not a captain in IPL 2026, he has indeed got a lot of leadership experience under his belt. He previously captained Rajasthan Royals from 2021 to 2025 and guided the team to its second-ever IPL final in 2022.

Sanju Samson is considered an ideal candidate because of his ability to stay calm under pressure and the advantage he offers operating from behind the wicket. The 31-year-old’s form, playing for CSK in IPL 2026, has been impressive, with 402 runs in just ten matches.

A fortunes shift: Sanju Samson’s explosive form since high-profile switch vindicates CSK trade

Sanju Samson’s blockbuster switch from RR to CSK can easily be categorized as the most impactful deal of IPL 2026. The 31-year-old wicket-keeper batter was acquired from the Royals in a massive INR 18 crore deal, which saw Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran head the other way.

Initially, fans and analysts were apprehensive, with many of them suggesting that Chennai parting ways with a long-time icon like Jadeja might prove costly. However, Sanju Samson maintained his T20 WC form in the IPL, and is now CSK’s highest run-getter in the ongoing 2026 season. In ten games, he has scored 402 runs at an average of 57.43 and a strike-rate of 167.50, including two centuries and a half-century.

Both of Samson’s hundreds in IPL 2026 came in match-winning efforts against the Mumbai Indians and the Delhi Capitals. While Ruturaj Gaikwad remains the captain of the five-time IPL-winning side, the 31-year-old’s ‘natural’ leadership traits carried from his RR days have also helped transform the CSK dugout, providing Gaikwad with all the necessary suggestions, particularly in the absence of MS Dhoni.

Samson is viewed as the long-term replacement for the legendary CSK player. However, the only notable issue so far in the 2026 season is that through ten matches, he and Ruturaj Gaikwad have only managed one 50+ run opening partnership.
