The iconic Swedish pole-vaulter, Armand ‘Mondo’ Duplantis rewrote the history books this time at the biggest stage of all. Duplantis set a new world record height of 6.25m, having already clinched the gold medal earlier on Monday with a vault of 6.00 m in the Paris Olympics. This was the ninth time, that he went on to shatter a world record, bettering his own 6.24 which was set in the Xiamen Diamond League earlier in April this year.

After winning a second straight gold medal and shattering the record for the ninth time, Armand Duplantis imitated the much talked about shooting pose of Turkey’s Yusuf Dikec who won a silver medal in his own event without any equipment provided by his country barring the pistol.

Dikec set the internet alight for his calm shooting which led him to the silver medal, sparking a meme fest over all the social media handles. In response to Duplantis’ celebration, Dikec shared the post on his X handle and congratulated the Swedish athlete.

Both Duplantis and Dikec were incredible in their individual events. The former surged past USA’s Sam Kendricks and Greece’s Emmanouil Karalis to clinch gold in pole vaulting. Dikec joined forces with Sevval Ilayda Tarhan to clinch the silver in the mixed 10m air pistol in Paris 2024.

A glance at Armand ‘Mondo’ Duplantis shattering world records over the years

Mondo Duplantis has been on a roll ever since he stepped foot in pole vaulting. The first record set by him was back in 2020 where he leapfrogged the likes of Sergey Bubka and Renaud Lavillenie to set a world record of 6.17m.

Since then, the numbers have continued to rise and the latest came yesterday with the board reading 6.25m as Stade de France erupted in sheer exhilaration.

The gold medal triumph saw him breaking the world record for the ninth time and he also became the first man to retain the pole vault title in Olympics since America’s Bob Richards that came in 1952 and 1956. On his triumph in Paris, he garnered massive words of plaudit from Sam Kendricks who finished second in the title race.
