World No.1 Scottie Scheffler will not be participating in the upcoming The American Express event. This comes after he missed the first event of the year – The Sentry due to a freak hand injury.
The 28-year-old had a memorable year in 2024. He claimed nine victories which included capturing a second major championship in The Masters tournament and an Olympic Gold Medal for his country at the Paris Games. His performances throughout the season earned him the PGA Tour Player of the Year award again.
During the Christmas celebration at his home, Scheffler injured his right hand while preparing dinner. He would later undergo a wrist surgery, which saw being forced to withdraw from The Sentry. With The American Express next in line, he has confirmed that he once again will not be part of the playing field.
Scheffler announced his withdrawal from this event through Instagram stories. The two-time major champion also expressed hopes of making his 2025 debut at The AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
His manager Blake Smith had claimed that it would take around 3-4 weeks for Scheffler to back to a 100 percent. In a statement released, Smith had added that Scheffler’s next scheduled tournament was The American Express. However, with the latest update from the golfer, fans will have to wait a little longer to see him back in action on the PGA Tour.
Scottie Scheffler finishes behind Tiger Woods in PIP rankings despite incredible 2024 season
Despite an incredible 2024 season, Scottie Scheffler lost out to Tiger Woods again. The World No.1 finished second in the PGA Tour’s Player Impact Program (PIP) behind Woods.
As per reports from Josh Carpenter of Sports Business Journal, the PGA Tour had already revealed the winners in late November. However, the memo was just viewed over this past weekend.
Woods finished in first place for the third time in the last four years and took home $10 million as payout. This comes after he played in just five officials events throughout the year. His only made cut and best finish came at The Masters tournament where he finished 60th.
As for Scheffler, he took home $8 million from PIP despite having more wins than Woods’ total appearances throughout the year. Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy, who topped the rankings in 2023, finished in third place and received $4.5 million.

This though was the final year of the PIP. From the 2025 season, the Player Equity Program (PEP) will start, making all tour members are eligible for recurring equity grants. As per reports, the program will be providing a recurring $100M annual grant this year through 2030.
