It appears head coach Sean Payton has found his quarterback of dreams as the Denver Broncos got its first exposure with first-round picked Bo Nix, potentially in the lead. Over the past couple of seasons, the franchise struggled a lot with the quarterback play and now finally as they moved on, they bet their odds on Nix from Oregon Ducks.
After everything that happened between Payton and former quarterback Russell Wilson, who has now moved to the Pittsburgh Steelers, Denver fans had lost hope of getting a good head coach-quarterback pairing. But seeing the way Payton is talking about Nix, there seems to be hope.
While talking to the reporters on Saturday, head coach Payton sounded confident in Nix’s ability to lead the offense. When asked whether there was anything about the rookie quarterback that impressed him, Payton recalled the private workout with him, saying he was bigger than the Broncos had expected, otherwise “it’s been exactly what we saw.”
Payton said.
He had two or three down-the-field throws today. It’s almost like watching a good golfer. Sometimes when you watch his game over two years, there’s a patience to how he plays. The ball comes out, and — I don’t want to use the term ‘boring,’ that’s not the right term, but [he makes] pretty good decisions. With each play, the efficiency of how he’s operating, and all of that.Sean Payton said
One crucial trait in in Nix that Payton fancies is the mobility he brings to that position. The Broncos look for players with good movement skills, and the quarterback needs to run the offense and make the right decisions.
Bo Nix ready to lead Broncos as starting quarterback
In his career in college football, Nix has started the highest count of games (61) in the history of the NCAA. He was among the top quarterbacks last season in college football and his draft selection was surely projected in the first round and so it did. The Broncos drafted him using the 12th overall pick.
As Nix is the potential starting quarterback for the Broncos in the upcoming 2024 season, he is ready to embrace the responsibility and the pressure that comes along its way.
I don't take that lightly and I'm not gonna take it for granted. Obviously, pressure gives you opportunities, so the more pressure and responsibility you have, just the more that you have to go out there and consistently earn it.Bo Nix said after his draft selection
The Broncos’ plan to make Wilson a franchise quarterback didn’t pan out well but they entered a new era with the starting quarterback. Denver is hoping to make Nix the franchise quarterback and reclaim its contender status.
