Over the recent years, many fighters in the UFC have engaged in active political discussions. No one has done it better than former middleweight champion Sean Strickland. Due to his conservative and libertarian beliefs, Strickland has remained very critical of the US involvement in the affairs of Europe and the Middle East.
Strickland has gone back and forth with Belal Muhammad on social media due to Muhammad’s staunch support for Palestine. The former middleweight champion also criticized a US veteran who self-immolated for the Palestinian cause. Nonetheless, Strickland’s recent criticism was against US funding the war in Ukraine.
100 billion to Ukraine… Mean while in America there is homeless, open borders, terrible public schools, crumbling infrastructure…. Ins*ne inflation. I just wanna know.. When all you fucking idiots posted Ukrainian flags do you ever look back and think "I'm a f**king idiot"?Sean Strickland via X
Strickland also added the question of whether the ones who supported Ukraine at the beginning now felt like an ‘idiot.’ The American middleweight had a rough childhood and considered himself ‘White Trash.’ As such, he is privy to the harsh conditions families go through due to the problems he mentioned in the tweet.
Nonetheless, Strickland sees hope in Donald Trump, the former US President. Strickland was extremely critical of politicians as a whole. However, since ‘Tarzan’ met Trump in Las Vegas, he has become a fan and has even endorsed the billionaire businessman for the upcoming elections.
Sean Strickland’s past criticism of US involvement in Ukraine
Sean Strickland had criticized the US involvement in Ukraine ever since Russian forces invaded the place. At the time, Strickland received criticism from the liberal media. However, after accumulating a lot of national debt, many of the early supporters of the war had a change of heart.
Back in mid-2023, Strickland reminded people of it. He had receipts of the criticism he received when he was against US involvement in the first place. Strickland stated the ones who criticized him were now upset. He had no filter, as he called them ‘st*pid.’ Considering Strickland’s character, the unfiltered criticism was not a surprise.
In addition to Strickland, many UFC fighters have made their views known. Merab Dvalishvili called for peace in the region after he defeated Petr Yan, the Russian fighter. Interestingly, Khamzat Chimaev, a potential opponent for Strickland, defended the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Chimaev is close to Ramzan Kadyrov, the head of the Chechen Republic, who is a close aide of Vladimir Putin.
As the war in Ukraine is going on, Strickland now has bragging rights due to his consistent opposition to US involvement. Chris Curtis, Strickland’s best friend, revealed that he was working on taking Strickland to therapy. Curtis does not condone Strickland’s actions of having a meltdown online over politics and cultural debates. It remains to be seen whether Strickland will change his outspoken character.
