Serbian defender Slavko Damjanovic joins Chennaiyin FC on a one-year deal

Indian Super League club Chennaiyin FC have roped in Serbian defender Slavko Damjanovic on a one-year contract, the club confirmed on Thursday.

Slavko Damjanovic started his career with FK Celik Niksic in 2009 and has played for several clubs since then. He scored his first league goal for Hungarian club Bekescsaba. Before joining Chennaiyin FC, the Serbian player Backa Topola FC. He made 11 appearances for them and scored a goal.

The 28-year-old will now don the yellow jersey during the upcoming edition of the Indian Super League (ISL).

“I am so happy to join [Chennaiyin FC]. I hope we win the league. The coach is bringing in good players. I will give my everything to the team. I look forward to representing a city with such culture,” the Montenegro-born footballer said.

The player has experience playing for various clubs across many leagues. The Marina Machans will hope that his experience comes in handy for the club.

“Slavko is a highly tactical player, and his inclusion is certain to give the team more stability from the back to the front,” CFC head coach Bozidar Bandovic said.

Two-time ISL champions Chennaiyin FC are on the lookout for their third Indian Super League. The Chennai-based club won the ISL in 2015 and 2017/18 season and also were the runner-up during the 2019/20 edition of the league.

Chennaiyin FC have started to build on their squad for the 2021 edition of the Indian Super League. They have signed three foreign players thus far. Mirlan Murzaev, Ariel Borysiuk were signed last month, while Slavko Damjanovic signed a one-year contract with the club today.

Recently, the club also roped in the services of Narayan Das, Debjit Majumder and Salam Ranjan Singh. Another Indian addition to their squad is Deepak Devrani, who penned a deal with the Marina Machans on August 5.
