Serena Williams believes that Coco Gauff needs to have confidence in her game after the 20-year-old failed to retain her US Open title. The American star failed to advance past the Round of 16 after losing to compatriot Emma Navarro in three sets.
Gauff has suffered a dip in form since Wimbledon. She failed to live up to expectations at the Paris Olympics, exiting in the third round. She returned from the Summer Games hoping to retain her Canadian Open and Cincinnati Open titles but failed to do so.
Despite an unconvincing performance at the two Masters 1000 events, she was still amongst the favorites to win the US Open. After winning her first three matches in New York, the American looked confident to defend her title. However, she faltered against Navarro in the fourth round, with an astonishing 19 double faults leading her to lose 3-6, 6-4, 3-6.
Serena Williams believes that Gauff does not need to change her game to return to winning ways. She just urged the youngster to have more confidence on the court.
I wouldn’t change anything on her forehand. I’ve seen a lot of interesting forehands. And listen, if you’re just confident in whatever you have, keep it up, and just be confident about it. That’s literally all she needs to do is just have confidence, whether she’s hitting it with her wrist or elbow. Just have confidence doing it.Serena Williams said (via CNN)
Serena Williams was spotted during the fourth round match between Grigor Dimitrov and Andrey Rublev at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. Frances Tiafoe also applauded her for inspiring him in his victory over Canadian Open champion Alexei Popyrin.
Coco Gauff cites mistakes in execution for her defeat to Emma Navarro at US Open
Coco Gauff suffered a shock fourth-round loss against Emma Navarro at the US Open. The American, who won her first title of the season at the Auckland Open in January, was looking to win several titles this year. Unfortunately, she has failed to rise when it matters in several tournaments this year.
The American reached the semifinals at both the Australian Open and French Open but failed to get past Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek, respectively. In a handful of tournaments where she had good chances of winning the title, she failed to capitalize on her chances.
After her US Open exit, Gauff stated that she gave her all emotionally and mentally, and blamed her exit for her failure to execute her game properly.
Mentally and emotionally, I gave it my all. But there are things execution-wise, where obviously I wish I could serve better. I think if I had (done) that, it would have been a different story for me in the match. Emotionally, I have no regrets, but obviously, I wish I could execute things better.Coco Gauff said (via CNN)
Gauff will hope to revive her season in the Asian swing. She will be back on the court for the WTA Masters 1000 Beijing Open, which gets underway on September 26.
