Seven time Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton knighted in New Year Honours list

Seven time Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton was awarded a knighthood in the UK New Year’s honours list published on Wednesday. The award comes as the icing on the cake for Hamilton who became the most successful F1 driver of all time this year. The Mercedes driver acheived the feat after equalling Ferrari great Michael Schumacher’s record seven titles and beating the German’s 91 race wins.
While he is renowned around the world as one of the most successful sportspersons in the world. He also used his profile to campaign for diversity and speak out against racial injustice. He is also famous for his philanthropic contributions in the UK and overseas.
Lewis is a true giant of our sport
Stefano Domenicali, Formula 1’s incoming CEO expressed his joy on Hamilton’s achievement. While hailing him a ‘giant of the sport’, Domenicalli shares that he is looking forward to more of Hamilton’s brilliance. Hamilton equalled Schumacher’s record after an astounding performance in the Turkish Grand Prix in November this year. And propelled Mercedes to their seventh straight constructor’s crown.
“Lewis is a true giant of our sport and his influence is huge both in and out of a car. What he has achieved is phenomenal with still more to come,” said Domenicali in an official statement.
“All of us at Formula 1 congratulate him on this well-deserved recognition of his achievements and look forward to seeing more of his brilliance in 2021,” he added.
Hamilton is the fourth F1 driver to be knighted after the late Australian Jack Brabham, Stirling Moss and triple champion Jackie Stewart. And the only one to have received the award while still racing.
