This past Sunday, 4-time gold medalist Sha’Carri Richardson found herself in some trouble. The 25-year-old track and field athlete was arrested at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

As per reports from The Athletic, Richardson got involved in a heated domestic dispute with her boyfriend and fellow track and field athlete Christian Coleman. During their argument, she was reported to have shoved him away several times before walking away. She would also throw something at him.

Richardson’s outburst was later labeled as a fourth-degree domestic violence. She was booked into South Correctional Entity (SCORE) in Des Moines on Sunday. After 19 hours, she was released on Monday after Coleman decided not to press charges.

The couple has been dating for over two years now. They went public about their relationship earlier this year, in February.

Richardson is no stranger to controversy. In 2021, she was suspended by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) after she tested positive for THC, a primary compound found in Cannabis. This suspension led to her missing the 2020 Tokyo Games, which took place in 2021.

In the race on Thursday, sprinter Kayla White upstaged the Olympic Champion with her performance. White came first in the 100m race while finishing within 10.89 seconds.

Despite her best efforts, Richardson had to settle for a 2nd place finish while completing the race in 11.07 seconds. White would go to improve her performance with a 10.84-second finish in the finals which sealed her place in the US squad for the upcoming World Athletics Championship in September.

The 100m race is not a major concern for Richardson. She is already cut for the 100m race at the World Athletics Championship due to her being the defending champion.

The reports of her arrest came at a time when both she and Coleman took part in the 2025 U.S. track and field championships. The two athletes would compete in the preliminary rounds on Thursday. On Day 1 of the National Championships, she finished 2nd in 11.07s to finish and advanced to the next round of the event.

The 2024 Olympic Gold Medalist would later withdraw from all events. She was reported to compete in the 100m and 200m races while hoping to qualify for the World Athletics Championships in September this year. However, Richardson changed her mind and told the officials about her plans to compete in the race this Sunday.

The race on Thursday was just the third time she has run this year due to a hamstring injury. She would now be hoping for a positive finish on Sunday as he gets ready for the World Athletics Championship in Tokyo, Japan, next month.
