The Bangladeshi southpaw apologised for his actions as he clarified that he didn’t inaugurate the Kali Puja. Shakib assured that being “a practising Muslim” he would never do anything of this kind. He went on to admit that maybe it was a mistake to attend the ceremony and asked for forgiveness from his fellow countrymen.

I was on the stage for barely two minutes. People are talking about this and thought I inaugurated it,” Shakib told an online forum late Monday.

I did not do this and being a conscious Muslim I would not do this. But, maybe, I should not have gone there. I am sorry for this and apologise. As a practising Muslim I always try to follow religious customs. Please forgive me if I have done anything wrong,” he added.

Shakib’s apology came hours after a man hurled death threats at him on a Facebook live forum, accusing him of “hurting religious sentiment”. The man, who later apologised for his unruly actions, was arrested in the northeastern district of Sunamganj on Tuesday.
