The moving day of the Masters Tournament was going well for Shane Lowry until the final 2 holes. He would bogey both the 17th and the 18th hole to finish the day even par. He would then rip the media for and storm out of the post-round interview.

Golfers skipping the post-round interview has been one of the talking points in the sport recently. Collin Morikawa drew huge criticism from fans and experts for not addressing the media after losing the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March last month.

Rory McIlroy would do the same thing this week. After a disappointing end to an impressive start during the first round, the 4-time major champion decided not to appear for any post-round interviews.

On Saturday, Lowry did attend the interview. He was then asked about McIlroy. The golfer did not seem interested in talking about his friend and snapped at the reporters at the Augusta National.

No. No, I’m not going to stand here and talk about Rory for 10 minutes. I’m trying to win the tournament, as well. I know that’s what y’all want me to talk about, but I’ve just had a s**t finish, I’ve got a chance to win the Masters tomorrow, and I’m going to go hit some balls.

Shane Lowry told the reporters

The 2019 Open Championship winner then suggested that there should be some time for preparation for golfers to participate in post round interviews.

We talk about Collin Morikawa a few weeks ago. I think we need time. I think I need a half an hour now to sit there and gather my thoughts. I can’t be coming to talk to you guys straightaway. It shouldn’t be happening. I don’t agree with it.

Shane Lowry added

Speaking of Morikawa, he once again defended himself this week before the Masters Tournament. The 2-time major champion expressed that he stood by what he said in his explanation to skip the Arnold Palmer Invitational presser. Rory McIlroy would later stand by his side and back him for this decision.

While there were some who agreed with this take, there were some who slammed him. Some users on X made some wild jokes regarding him and Rory McIlroy. Meanwhile, one fan called them ‘soft’ by writing, “These guys are so soft.”

Unlike the other professional sports leagues, the PGA Tour players do not have a contract obligation to speak to the media. As a result of this, players are technically free to skip the post-round media duties if they want to without facing the danger of getting fined.

Can Shane Lowry win the Masters after poor ending to Round 3?

Up until the final two holes, Shane Lowry found himself in a good position. The 38-year-old was 2-under par for the day and was looking to end the round while being inside the top 5. However, two late bogeys saw him conclude the day with an even par score of 76. Can he now win the Masters from this position?

Lowry will start the final round while being 5-under par for the tournament. He though, is 7 shots behind his best friend, Rory McIlroy. His score of 72 saw him fall one ranking and is tied for 6th alongside Scottie Scheffler, Jason Day, and Justin Rose.

To win from this position, not only will Lowry have to fire an extremely low score, he will also need to rely on others having a poor outing as well. Along with Scheffler, Day, and Rose, a total of 4 golfers are between him and McIlroy on the top of the leaderboard.

However, there have been instances where, despite having a huge lead, players have failed to win. In 1958, Jack Burke Jr. came back from 8 shots down to win the Masters Tournament. In 1996, Greg Norman led Sir Nick Faldo by 6 shots while entering the tournament. He finished 5 shots behind him at the end of the day.

So, it is not impossible for Lowry to win from this position. He will, though, need a miraculous performance to snatch the title away from his rivals on Sunday.
