Shane Lowry secured a two-shot lead at Royal Troon in Scotland after a disastrous 30-minute saga on the 11th “Railway” hole. After narrowly surviving sending his tee shot onto the train tracks, Lowry’s subsequent effort from the rough went careening left into the thick gorse across the other side of the fairway.

Lowry later admitted that he lost his train of thought and was “a little distracted” while standing over his shot. He later pointed at a nearby cameraman and admitted to losing his train of thought.

There was a cameraman there, and he was walking up. I asked him to stop or move back, and he just kind of stayed there. As it was over, he put his camera up. I kind of saw it out of the corner of my eye, and I should stood off it, (it was) my own fault.
Shane Lowry told the reporters

Shane Lowry struggled to maintain his two-shot lead at Royal Portrush after a provisional shot was deemed lost outside a penalty area. After a lengthy debate with a rules official, Lowry exited with a double bogey but subsequently pondered on the scenario.

Despite losing his calm, Lowry responded with four consecutive pars and a birdie in three holes. He regained the lead over English duo Justin Rose and Daniel Brown. Lowry hopes to replicate his overwhelming triumph at Royal Portrush five years ago.

Shane Lowry aside, Rory Mcllroy missed the cut at the Open Championship 2024

Rory McIlroy, the world No. 2 golfer, failed to make the cut at Royal Troon, falling 11-over par overall. The 35-year-old star had been trying to recover from a major near-miss at the US Open but found more trouble at Royal Troon.

His hopes of making the cut were effectively extinguished by the end of the sixth hole, with bogeys on the third and fifth holes. McIlroy’s final round score of 75 ensured his wait for a fifth major will continue into an 11th year.

Tiger Woods will also be absent this weekend, marking only the second time in his career that he has missed three straight major cuts. The 48-year-old blasted 79 and 77 to finish 14-over par, the joint-highest 36-hole number he has ever recorded in a major, but said he relished the challenge.

Bryson DeChambeau and Wyndham Clark failed to survive the cut, along with world No. 4 Ludvig Aberg and world No. 7 Viktor Hovland. Only half of the top-10 ranked players, including Scheffler, Schauffele, Morikawa, Cantlay, and Rahm, will tee up on Saturday.
