On the other hand, Tomas Machac has experienced an evident upward trend in the second half of this season. His qualification for the quarterfinals of the Shanghai Masters can attest to that. The 23-year-old reached the semifinals of the Japan Open. However, he failed to make it to the final after losing in three sets to Ugo Humbert.
He opened his Shanghai Masters account with a win over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in 1-6, 7-6(3), 6-4. He then cruised past Australia’s Aleksandar Vukic in straight sets. It was in the Round of 16 that the Czech star showed his class. He came from behind to beat Tommy Paul 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.
