For Jamaican sprinting legend Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, stepping on the tracks to do what she does best is nothing new. Except this time at the Paris Olympics, the eight-time medalist faces an unprecedented challenge. She is not being allowed access to the athlete’s warmup area owing to a new rule change that has put the odds of her winning another medal in jeopardy.

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce could be seen attempting to get access to the warmup area, however, officials remained reluctant to let her in as she did not arrive on the team bus. The new rule states that athletes must arrive on the team bus in order to gain access to the warmup facilities, the rationale behind such a rule remains unknown but it could ruin Fraser-Pryce’s final shot to win her fourth career gold medal.

This rule appears to have been implemented without being explained beforehand to all athletes. This is where it gets tricky since Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce cannot warm up, she has been listed as DNS or ‘did not start.’

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce’s last 100m Olympic quest ends in disappointment

Owing to these last-minute complications, the Jamaican sprinter has been compelled to withdraw from the Paris Olympics women’s 100m semis just minutes before the race commences. This marks an unexpected and disappointing end to the 37-year-old’s magnificent track career.

Fraser-Pryce walks away from Paris without adding to her current tally of 32 global medals. She is the third-fastest woman in history with a personal best time of 10.60 in the 100M. She won back-to-back gold medals in the Beijing and London Olympics before winning a bronze in Rio in the 100M category.

The semifinal of the women’s 100M race was an event that fans were looking forward to as Fraser-Pryce would be going up against her American rival, Sha’Carri Richardson. However, owing to the earlier complication caused by the rule change, the Jamaican did not get an opportunity to warm up thoroughly. It is being reported that she suffered a hamstring injury during her warm-up. The severity of the injury remains uncertain for now. There is a possibility that she may have rushed her warmup routine and in that process injured her hamstring. Needless to say, it is unfortunate to see this legend go out without getting a chance to compete in her final Olympics.
