Shohei Ohtani continues to impress baseball fans with his incredible 2-way performance. On Wednesday, the Los Angeles Dodgers star excelled from both the mound and the plate in a 4-0 victory over the San Diego Padres.

In the past few games, the Dodgers had opted to keep him out of the batting lineup when he took to the mound as the starting pitcher. This was done to reduce his workload.

However, for the game on Wednesday, manager Dave Roberts put him in the lineup. He batted in his usual spot as the leadoff hitter and was the first one to come up to the plate as his side took on their division rivals at Petco Park.

On the very first pitch of the game, Ohtani went yard. The reigning National League MVP blasted a 96 mph fastball off Randy Vasquez to center field to give his side an early lead.

Following the Dodgers’ inning, Ohtani took to the mound. While he had struggled with his batting recently, he has been in fine form as a pitcher. After Fernando Tatis Jr. grounded out, he struck out Miguel Andujar and Gavin Sheets to end the first inning.

The Japanese international went on to pitch 5 scoreless innings and finished with 4 strikeouts, 2 walks, and 3 hits. He thus managed to lower his ERA to 0.73 for the season.

The Dodgers thus picked up a 7th win in their last 8 games. They also picked up the series win against their division rivals and improved their season record to 31-19 after 50 games.

His leadoff home run marked just the 2nd time that a starting pitcher in MLB had hit a leadoff bomb in a game where they were pitching. The 1st time this happened was in Game 4 of the 2025 National League Championship Series (NLCS).

In that game against the Milwaukee Brewers, Ohtani had a leadoff home run. He went on to hit 2 more homers and picked up 10 strikeouts as the Dodgers won 5-1 and completed a sweep.

Up next for Ohtani and his team is a 3-game road series against the Brewers. After that, they will return home to take on the Colorado Rockies.

As for the Padres, they remain 2nd in the NL West standings, 1.5 games behind the Dodgers with a 29-20 record. Their next encounter sees them face off against the Athletics.
