On Sunday, the New York Mets stunned the New York Yankees. In the Subway Series finale, the National League East side came from behind and walked off their crosstown rivals to win the series 2-1 and claim bragging rights.

This weekend was the rivalry week in MLB. As city and state rivals faced off, many eyes were on the Subway Series as the Yankees traveled to Queens to take on the Mets.

The series opener saw Cam Schlittler dominate from the mound once again. The Yankees’ starting pitcher threw 6.2 innings and gave up just 1 run as the Bronx Bombers claimed a 5-2 win.

The second game of the series saw the Mets fire back. Despite having just 8 hits, one less than the Yankees, they emerged as 6-3 winners and made the finale on Sunday a rubber game.

In this encounter, the Yankees struck first. A solo home run from Ben Rice made it a 1-0 game in the 3rd inning. The Mets answered back in the 4th inning with a double by Marcus Semien.

The Yanks then put up 4 runs in the 6th inning as a 2-run single from Anthony Volpe, a sacrifice fly from Amed Rosario, and a fielding error from the Mets saw them take a 5-1 lead.

A double from Luis Torrens at the bottom of the frame made it a 5-3 game. A bases-loaded walk to Volpe in the 7th inning extended the Yankees’ lead once again.

With two outs in the bottom of the 9th inning, Tyrone Taylor came to the Mets’ rescue. A 3-run home run off David Bednar saw him tie the game at 6-6. As the game was level after 9 innings, it went into extra innings.

In the 10th inning, Carson Benge chopped the ball over the head of pitcher Tim Hill. As infielder Max Schuemann tried to field it, he collided with Volpe. By the time he could make the throw, the Mets had scored the run and walked off their rivals 7-6.

This win marked the first time the Mets had won a game in 2 years while trailing after 8 innings. Their last such victory came in Game 3 of the National League Wild Card Series against the Milwaukee Brewers in 2024.

The Mets, who have struggled this year, finish off their homestand with a 5-1 record. Before this showdown against the Yankees, they had swept the Detroit Tigers, outscoring the American League Central side by a 22-8 combined scoreline in 3 games.

For the Yankees, this was a 7th loss in their last 9 games. As a result of this, the 27-time World Series winners are left with a 28-19 record, 3 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays. Before this slump, they had won 6 of their last 7 games and were 26-12.

David Bednar admits being frustrated with blown save against Mets

The New York Yankees suffered another defeat on the road as they lost 7-6 against the New York Mets. Following the game, relief pitcher David Bednar admitted that he was frustrated by blowing the save for his team.

With a 3-run lead heading into the 9th inning, Yankees manager Aaron Boone would replace Fernando Cruz and bring in Bednar. The right-handed pitcher started by giving two singles to Carson Benge and Bo Bichette.

The team was then able to force out Juan Soto before Mark Vientos struck out. In his very first pitch to Taylor, Bednar gave up the game-tying home run. As the game was when he was replaced by Tim Hill, he was not credited with the loss.

The pitcher was unhappy with his performance and expressed that it was unacceptable.

Just not putting guys away early. Getting to two strikes on the first guy and not being able to put him away… Overall it’s unacceptable, especially in that spot, it’s just very frustrating.

David Bednar said as per SNY

Bednar is 1-3 for the season with a 4.95 ERA in 20 games. The Yankees will now return to the Bronx and have some big battles in the AL East division as they take part in a 4-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays before locking horns in a 3-game set with the Tampa Bay Rays.
