In Short
  • Shreyas Iyer aims to lead Punjab Kings to their first IPL title in 18 years.
  • The team remains unbeaten this season under Iyer's leadership and strategic adjustments.
  • Iyer emphasizes focusing on the present and self-improvement for team synergy.

Shreyas Iyer is fully focused on leading the Punjab Kings to the IPL trophy, which would conclude the team’s 18-year title drought. Iyer, who guided the franchise to the final in 2025, also stressed the necessity of concentrating on the present.

PBKS are one of the front-runners to lift the IPL title this summer, courtesy of Shreyas Iyer’s leadership, which has transformed the franchise. Iyer seems to have brought a level of stability and temperament that the team previously lacked, evident from the fact that he led the team to the final last summer for the first time in over a decade. PBKS is, in fact, the only team to remain unbeaten in the tournament so far.

The 31-year-old’s partnership with head coach Ricky Ponting is evident in their strategic adjustments, which include aggressive batting and a competitive bowling strategy.

Iyer’s record as a leader in the IPL is impressive, given he is the only captain to lead three different franchises (DC, KKR, and PBKS) to a final. Iyer has also been a prolific run-getter as well, having most recently equaled MS Dhoni’s record of 22 fifty+ scores as captain in the IPL.

Iyer opened up about his intentions for the 2026 IPL season, on JioHostar. He clarified that his ultimate goal is to win the IPL trophy with Punjab Kings. He however, emphasized the need to focus on staying in the present as well and taking things one at a time. He stressed upon playing with intensity throughout the season, while also avoiding distractions from the past or expectations from the future.

The mission, obviously, is to lift the trophy. But I always feel that the more you stay in the present, the more you stay in control of what is in your hands at that moment and you just have to go full throttle.

Shreyas Iyer also reiterated his need for ‘synergy’, advising his teammates to focus on self-improvement instead of the opponent. The 31-year-old captain has also been PBKS’ contributor-in-chief with the bat, having scored 203 runs in four innings at a remarkable average of 67.67. He also opened up about the ‘Sarpanch’ tag associated with him, revealing that he was initially clueless about how he ended up with the nickname.

I reiterate the point to my teammates as well, that when we are out there, we are playing for ourselves, not against the opponents. We just want to improve each day. When everything comes together and that synergy builds, everything falls into place.

Punjab Kings will next take on Lucknow Super Giants at the PCA Stadium in Mullanpur, New Chandigarh. LSG have been among the struggling sides this summer, having won two and lost three out of the five matches that they have played so far.

Sachin Tendulkar’s rare social media post breaks down Shreyas Iyer’s ‘Catch of the Season’ against MI

Indian cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar was right on the spot as he broke down Punjab Kings’ skipper Shreyas Iyer’s catch against the Mumbai Indians. Iyer did the unthinkable by assisting a stunning acrobatic catch on the boundary rope to dismiss Hardik Pandya.

Although Iyer did not complete the catch himself, he set it up for Xavier Bartlett. Pandya, with his team at 175/3 in the 17th over, went for a maximum down the ground. It seemed certain that his shot would go all the way, but the PBKS skipper ran in from long-on. He leaped sideways, reverse cupping the ball while being airborne and outside the rope, before lobbing it to Bartlett, who was inside the line and completed it.

The attempt stunned fans and former players alike, with many of them describing it as the ‘Catch of the Season’. Sachin Tendulkar was also full of praise for Iyer’s effort, and he took to social media to sum up how the 31-year-old got everything ‘spot-on’. He attributed the catch’s brilliance to the player’s awareness, noting that he perfectly judged the speed and other factors before finishing the play with composure.

The Punjab Kings’ skipper’s incredible effort even left MI stars Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav baffled. The 2024 IPL winning captain went on to score a remarkable 66 runs off just 35 balls as well, to help his team over the line in a 196-run chase.
