IPL 2021: Shreyas Iyer to miss entire tournament, DC co-owner Parth Jindal confirms

Delhi Capitals (DC) have been dealt a huge blow as their skipper and batting ace Shreyas Iyer is set to be ruled out of the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) due to a shoulder injury that he suffered during the first ODI of the ongoing three-match series against England in Pune. DC’s co-owner Parth Jindal confirmed the news on his Twitter handle stating that he is devastated.

Shreyas Iyer played a crucial role in DC’s run to the final last year both with his captaincy and with the bat. He scored 519 runs in 17 matches at an average of 34.60. In his absence, DC would be looking for a new captain now and there are three candidates in the form of Steve Smith, Ravichandran Ashwin and Shikhar Dhawan. It remains to be seen who will be named to don the skipper’s role.

DC co-owner Parth Jindal took to Twitter today to address the issue of Shreyas Iyer’s injury. Although he did not express mention that the batsman would miss the IPL, his tweet made it almost certain that it was the case.

He wrote, “Absolutely devastated and gutted for our skipper @ShreyasIyer15 – stay strong captain – hope for a very quick recovery. Have full faith that you will come back even stronger from this. India needs you in the T20 World Cup. @DelhiCapitals@BCCI”

It is noteworthy that Shreyas Iyer had only recently signed up with English county side Lancashire to take part in the Royal London One-Day Cup in July. However, that remains in doubt now as well with it looking like the 26-year-old would need surgery for his shoulder.
