Michael Chiesa recently scored a win at UFC Abu Dhabi. The UFC contender took out the promotion’s former legendary fighter, Tony Ferguson. Now he has his eyes set on top welterweight contender Colby Covington. Here is what happened:
Interestingly, Michael Chiesa already has plans for his next probable matchup in the octagon. During his interview backstage after the fight, ‘Maverick’ called out former interim welterweight champion, Colby Covington. He claimed that he was not after the rankings but rather wanted to find out who was the better welterweight.
Yes, there is something I want to f*cking say. I want to fight Colby Covington. I've been saying this for years. The guy can sit on the sidelines and say whatever he wants, whatever. I'm not chasing the rankings. I don't give a sh*t. I just want to find out who is the best fighter, who is the best welterweight in the Pacific Northwest.Michael Chiesa at UFC Abu Dhabi
Chiesa scored a first-round submission victory against Ferguson. He did it via a rear-naked choke to give Ferguson his eighth consecutive loss in the promotion. ‘Maverick’ is currently unranked while Covington ranks #4 in the 170 lbs weight class.
However, ‘Chaos’ has been highly inactive in the past couple of years, fighting only one bout each year since 2020. Meanwhile, ‘Maverick’ broke his three-fight losing streak with the win against Ferguson at Abu Dhabi. Now it will be interesting to see if the unranked contender gets to fight the controversial welterweight for his once-in-a-year bout in 2024.
Belal Muhammad responds to Colby Covington’s comments
Colby Covington was not ready to accept Belal Muhammad as the new champion of his division. The idle welterweight called out the champion in his recent interview with Submission Radio. ‘Chaos’ claimed that ‘Remember The Name’ had got lucky and if they ever crossed paths in the octagon, the Palestinian would not be champion anymore.
Belal Muhammad addressed Covington’s comments in a recent interview with MMA Junkie. He pointed out Covington’s 0-3 title fight record and said that ‘Chaos’ would never become a welterweight champion. He doubled down on this during his response to ‘Chao’ urging him to “keep talking”.
You'll never touch the gold. You'll never be who I am.Belal Muhammad on MMA Mania
As for the threats from the MAGA supporter, the welterweight champion was ready to face Covington in public. It will be interesting to see where this back-and-forth leads and if a potential fight happens down the line.
