On Wednesday, Jack Hughes‘ request to get the golden goal puck from the Hockey Hall of Fame was declined. Amid this drama, Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby offered his thoughts regarding this.
Hughes became a national hero for America last month during the Winter Olympics in Milan. In the gold medal game against Canada, he scored an overtime winner to secure the U.S. first Olympic gold medal in men’s ice hockey since 1980.
The puck, which Hughes buried past goaltender Jordan Binnington to secure the 2-1 win, has been kept in the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. Earlier this week, the 24-year-old would ask why they had the puck and revealed that he was trying to get it back.
I’m trying to get it. Like, that’s bull**** that the Hockey Hall of Fame has it, in my opinion. Why would they have that puck?

On Wednesday, the Vice President of the resource center and curator for the Hockey Hall of Fame, Philip Pritchard, addressed this situation. While speaking to ESPN, he claimed that it was never his puck to own.
Unfortunately, in the easiest words, it was never Jack’s puck to own.

The Hockey Hall of Fame said it will NOT give #NJDevils and Team USA star Jack Hughes the puck from his gold-medal winning goal in the Milan Cortina Olympics.

In the midst of this drama, Sidney Crosby was asked his opinion regarding it. The Penguins captain had scored the golden goal for Canada against the USA in the 2010 Vancouver Games to secure the gold medal for his country and break the opposition’s hearts.
I don’t even think about it that way, to be honest with you. I was just happy that I scored the goal. I was happy that the puck was going to the Hall of Fame.

Speaking of Crosby, he was not in the gold medal game for Canada. During the quarterfinal game against Czechia, he suffered a blow after a collision with Radko Gudas.
The veteran forward would thus miss the semifinals and the final. In his absence, Connor McDavid led the team and was wearing the captain’s “C” on his jersey.
Jack Hughes comments regarding the golden goal puck after the HHOF turns his request down
Jack Hughes will not get the golden goal puck from the Hockey Hall of Fame to keep it as a souvenir. After his initial comments, the New Jersey Devils commented on this matter again.

Following the game against the New York Rangers, the forward claimed it was an honor to see the puck in the Hall of Fame. It is however, likely that he will not be calling them again anytime soon.
I mean, listen, I’m obviously honored that the puck’s there. I mean it’s the most special place in hockey. I’m honored that it’s there. … Dude, I’ve been playing hockey, right. That’s where my head is at.
Jack Hughes told the reporters
These words from Hughes came after he had another strong outing against the New York Rangers. On March 7, the Devils star scored a hat-trick against them in the Hudson River Rivalry and helped his side to a thumping 6-3 win.

This is the 14th consecutive game in which Hughes has recorded a point against the Rangers. This impressive streak stretches back to March 22, 2022. In this run, he has scored 28 points (17 goals and 11 assists).
This victory marked a 3rd straight win for the Devils, who are now 35-31-2 for the season after 68 games. They sit 7th in the Metropolitan Division standings with 72 points and will need a huge winning run from here on to keep their Stanley Cup playoffs hopes alive.
