Seeing Simone Biles perform at the Paris Olympics 2024 has been a treat to the eyes. However, things took a surprising turn this Monday when the legendary gymnast missed out on a medal for the first time at this year’s Games. Biles slipped off the beam, which resulted in her not making it onto the podium and left the gold for Alice d’Amato.
With a score of 13.100, Biles finished fifth in the individual beam final after losing her balance while landing on the apparatus. However, this cost the world’s highest gold medalist more than a medal, as she missed her chance to tie Larisa Latynina‘s all-time Olympic record for most medals by a female gymnast.
Nearly half of the gymnasts performing the routine lost their balance including American Suni Lee, who also crashed off the beam. This made the gold won by Italy’s d’Amato with a score of 14.366 a brilliant victory and China’s Zhou Yaqin secured the silver at 14.100.
I've never seen Simone Biles look so angry in my life. Simone is not happy at all. It just goes to show she is a human being. All the other ladies in that final have made mistakes. She's not invincible.Craig Heap said
Judging from the videos and pictures after Biles’ fall, she looked clearly upset while speaking to her coach and teammate Sunisa Lee.
Simone Biles shares insights on therapy’s role in her Olympic comeback
Biles, who is known as the most decorated gymnast of all time, has one last chance left to add another gold to the list. And this makes her floor final extremely crucial accompanied by loads of pressure.
The gymnast also opened up about how she withdrew from the Olympics three years ago at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and admitted that after winning gold for Team USA in the team final, those memories of withdrawal flew back in as she prepared for her vault.
Since then, after taking some time off from professional gymnastics, Biles has become a strong advocate for mental health. At the Paris Olympics, she revealed that she talks to her therapist every morning before her competitions and every Thursday. She acknowledged how draining competitions as big as the Olympic Games can be, emphasizing that athletes need a clear mind free of unnecessary jitters.
