For the past six seasons, Daryl Morey had been tasked with building a championship contender out of the Philadelphia 76ers. That meant he had to take control of ‘The Process,’ and take it up a notch.

The Wisconsin native arrived after losing his job as the Houston Rockets GM. At the time, owner Josh Harris felt Morey’s vision, with his 2018 Executive of the Year award on the stand behind his chair, would bear fruit for his team.

The 53-year-old’s first move was to trade away Ben Simmons. At the time, franchise fans felt that Morey had essentially saved their team from getting stuck with an overrated player.

In return, he brought in James Harden, which was seen as a major win. But the two, who had worked with the Rockets in the past, had a major fallout. Then, ahead of the 2024-25 season, the GM built a team that, on paper, was a championship contender. After a disappointing season mired by injuries, Harris decided to give the core one last chance.

Again, they fell short. This time, it was even more embarrassing, as the New York Knicks came to town and swept the 76ers 4-0. It seems that was the final death knell.

Shams Charania revealed that Daryl Morey was fired from his post as President of Basketball Operations. However, Nick Nurse stays on despite rumors that his job was also on the line.

Fans cheer after Daryl Morey gets the boot

This news would not come as a surprise to the Philadelphia 76ers and basketball fans in general. Daryl Morey might have created good rosters, but they never end up winning anything.

Moreover, some of his choices started to anger both fans and players alike. That is why most social media reactions to this news were joyful. Check out examples of those below.

Houston Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta allegedly remarked in the past that he was baffled by Daryl Morey’s bizarre opinions while justifying losses. That should give an insight into how many in the league view him. Therefore, for Josh Harris to allow this for this long was the most he could do.

Daryl Morey is a liar, and I will never be a part of an organization that he’s a part of.

James Harden said in China back in 2023

This is coming from someone who has worked with the now former executive on three occasions and has had success. For Harden to say this was wild at the time.

Many felt he was being selfish, as Morey declined to hand him a rich contract. But now, everything comes full circle: the former league MVP is in the postseason, and it is unlikely that his former boss will get another job in the NBA.
