“I’ve been on a really long journey”: 2 time Olympic Champion Chloe Kim opens up about mental health struggles

Chloe Kim

Olympic Champion Chloe Kim has tasted success quite often, but being the best in the field has often left her feeling quite alienated. The first Korean American medallist to dominated the sport, Kim felt quite like an outsider.

The Winter Olympics at Beijing this year were quite the show of lack of diversity, as very few to no women of colour made an appearance. However, Kim says that over the last few years her outspokenness has opened quite a few people’s eyes, especially those around her.

“Being the person to make some change happen is really important to me, so being able to achieve that in some ways feels good,” she said at a launch event in partnership with Purina Plan Pro. Chloe Kim has been a part of snowboarding ever since she was a teenager, winning her first halfpipe Olympic gold medal at the age of just 17 at the 2018 Winter Olympics. She went on to the successfully defend her title this year at Beijing.

She also talked about the importance of her family and the support that they have offered to her over her journey. “Being more open and outspoken with my family about everything that’s going on in my life has been helpful so then when I got to Beijing I feel like I set myself up for success in the aspect so I was able to handle it pretty well.”
