Sofia Kenin expressed her frustration by shouting expletives at match officials and the Italian crowd during her rain-hit first-round match against home favorite Lucia Bronzetti in the ongoing Rome Open on Wednesday (May 8).

During the first set, Bronzetti was leading it by 3-2 and was on the verge of winning another game. Kenin, however, was able to hamper the Italian’s progress by leveling the points 40-40.

Kenin did not let the Italian any more games in the first set as she clinched it with scores of 6-3, and went on to win the match 6-3, 6-2. She will next face Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur.

They have played against each other seven times and the former World No.2 doesn’t have a good head-to-head, as the 25-year-old American defeated her five times. Their last encounter was at the 2021 Miami Open which the Tunisian won. Her second win over Kenin came at the 2017 Indian Harbour Beach tournament.

Kenin is not having a great season as she has not yet reached the quarterfinals of any event. Her best came at the Hobart International when she made it to the Round of 16. She last played at the Catalonia Open, a WTA 125 event where she lost to fellow American Ashlyn Krueger in three sets in the fourth round.

On the other hand, Jabeur also has not won a title this season. Despite reaching multiple quarterfinals, she failed to progress into the semifinals. The 29-year-old last played at the Madrid Open where America’s Madison Keys defeated her in three sets in the quarterfinals.
