“Our hearts are aching”: Softball star Lauren Bernett’s tragic death at age 20

Young softball star Lauren Bernett, a standout on James Madisons, who team Dukes reach the semifinals of the Women’s College World Series last year died at the age of 20.
A sophomore at JMU, the university recently released a letter of mourning, while the cause of death has not yet been revealed. “Our hearts are aching, hearing the news of the loss of one of our student-athletes. Lauren Bernett was a high-achieving member of our softball team and a great ambassador of JMU and our athletics program,” said the letter.

The letter continued, “College athletics is great because of the people with whom we get to interact every day. We are a tight family. We are grateful that Lauren has been part of our JMU Athletics community and will always consider her to be a Duke. We will miss her dearly.”
Bernett was a member of the National Honour Society and aimed to get a degree in biology with a minor in pre-vet. Bernett was named the Colonial Athletic Association’s player of the week on Monday. Her untimely death follows that of another promising college athlete, Wisconsin track star Sarah Shulze, earlier this month.
